The issue

This petition is led by MESH — Movement for Education, Systems & Health.  MESH is a movement working to reimagine agency, culture and trust in the systems that shape people’s lives (more below).

Britain’s colonial history and Commonwealth relationships have helped shape public-service systems in many parts of the world. The UK’s 2027 G20 Presidency is an opportunity for British institutions to examine that legacy and help rebalance cultural decision-making with communities internationally.

Every community should be able to shape the health and education systems that affect its lives. As the UK prepares to chair the G20 in 2027, we call on the UK Government to establish a permanent, publicly accountable way to show whose knowledge, needs and decisions shape health and education systems.

This requires more than a statement of intent. We are calling for:

  1. A public, independently reviewed, baseline of representation, decision-making and outcomes
  2. Locally led pilot programmes, overseen by an independent local convenor appointed through a transparent process and accountable to the relevant UK government department and participating communities
  3. Safeguards to ensure that no single organisation or community dominates those pilots, with agreed small changes implemented and publicly reported
  4. A mandatory corrective-action duty: where the baseline, local pilots, or community evidence identifies exclusion or a lack of meaningful influence for Indigenous or multicultural communities, the responsible institution must publish a corrective-action plan within 90 days. The plan must name the accountable lead, intended outcomes, resources, actions, deadlines and how progress will be reported publicly
  5. A commitment to share learning internationally through established networks like the G7, the G20 and the OECD, without treating UK practice as the default
  6. All governance for this work should be co-designed with affected communities and actions, deadlines and progress reporting should be publicly transparent

This is not a call for symbolic consultation. Participation without meaningful influence, evidence, resources and consequences is tokenism.

About MESH

Established in 2024 by a group of World Values Day members, MESH has now grown into a fully formed movement. Our current mission is to present the case for 'Reimagining Agency, Culture & Trust' in global and domestic public education and healthcare systems. While that might sound a bit fancy, we're effectively creating a way for frontline workers and service users to present ideas for how to improve systems that can sometimes feel inhumane and prejudiced.

We are using our connections with the G20 Summit as a target for producing our first full report and survey outcomes. We have chosen the UK G20 2027 Summit, which gives us a tight but manageable amount of time to conduct the survey, accept more specific contributions of ideas and hold some workshops to ensure we are presenting everyone's interests in the most respectful way. Visit www.TarakinGlobal.com/MESH for more information about past G20s and MESH reports and submissions.

This petition is one of the ways we are demonstrating that our work is supported by those on the frontline. You can sign as an individual and, if you wish, tell us which community, profession, experience or place informs your perspective. You can also find our survey here or email MESH@TarakinGlobal.com for more information about the global campaign.
