Below is a PSA on COVID-19 for victims of abuse and violence with resources available during this crisis.
Please encourage local media, politicians, organizations and more to share widely so that we can reach as many people as possible!
SAFETY PLANNING FOR VICTIMS OF SEXUAL, PHYSICAL OR EMOTIONAL ASSAULT
If you are a victim of abuse and/or assault, the COVID-19 restrictions can put you in a dangerous situation. When your safe places shut down, and social distancing requires you to stay away from the people you depend on and be near your abuser, your situation can feel helpless.
You are not alone.
What to know about COVID-19
1. The virus is highly contagious. To stop spreading, the government is highly recommending people stay home excluding essential outings, and recommending distancing in-person contact when you are out — the recommended distance is 6 feet.
2. Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds after you have been in a public place, or after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. Avoid touching your hands, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands. This eliminates potential germs that spread.
3. Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces daily (these include tables, doorknobs, cellphones.)
4. If you do not have access to soap and water, try to access a hand sanitizer that is at least 60% alcohol. You can also make your own.
How to stay safe (courtesy of RAINN)
1. Make a list of supportive people to have regular check-ins via phone or video chat.
2. Take breaks outside, keeping social distancing in mind.
3. Consider what places in your home are easy to get in and out of during a conflict.
4. Create a code word to share with your support network that indicates you are in need of immediate help.
5. Make and hide an ‘escape bag’ with your important documents, medicine, key & other items.
6. Be gentle with yourself. You’re doing the best you can.
