The Issue

Growing up in Coeur d’Alene, ID, I have always been surrounded by high horsepower vehicles that come with a roar of their own. Some vehicles are manufactured with powerful engines that naturally produce more noise, while others necessitate exhaust modifications to achieve needed power levels. This isn't just about cars—it's a passion and a lifestyle that many of us cherish and share.

However, the current vehicle noise ordinance in our city imposes severe restrictions that impact enthusiasts and ordinary drivers alike. More alarmingly, violations of these noise regulations can result in jail time, an extreme penalty for something that should be considered a minor infraction.

According to Coeur d'Alene city ordinance 10.80.030 and 10.80.050 , the noise level permissible is unreasonably low, especially for vehicles designed for performance. Many citizens have voiced concern over this ordinance, recognizing its adverse effects on our community of car enthusiasts. Furthermore, such strict enforcement can discourage tourism and business growth related to automotive events that are integral to our local culture.

We propose that the City Council of Coeur d'Alene reassess these vehicle noise ordinances to establish more reasonable levels that reflect the nature of today's vehicles. In addition, eliminating imprisonment as a punitive measure for noise violations would be a fair adjustment, bringing sanity and balance to our community.

Let's come together to support our automotive community, protect our shared interests, and ensure our town values one of the hallmarks of American innovation and freedom. Please sign this petition to urge our city leaders to reconsider these restrictive laws.
