Reassess and Adjust London's Neighbourhood Blockages and Speed Limits

The Issue

I, like many others, am deeply frustrated and stressed by the increasing blockages and decreased speed limits across London. Not to mention the oversaturated communities' cameras.  Good drivers are in danger of losing licences and given the cost of living, finding money for unnecessary fines is taking a toll too.  Navigating the city has become a challenge, filled with the fear of making a wrong turn or breaching an unrealistically low speed limit. I am not alone in this concern. We are accumulating unnecessary fines and point penalties, adding to the strain of city and suburban commuting.

The current layout not only heightens concerns about penalties as a result of confusion or minor mistakes but also increases the likelihood of road accidents as drivers are over-focused on compliance rather than the traffic around them. The unnaturally low speed limit of 20mph and blocked neighbourhood roads mean it is impossible to take shortcuts, causing the main streets to becoming congested and chaotic 'car parks' as seen daily.

Stats show that despite its good intention, lower speed limits lead to more traffic congestion rather than improved safety, according to a 2018 report by BussinessTech. Additionally, Neil Greig, the Policy and Research Director at IAM RoadSmart, highlighted that there has been an increased level of driver anxiety due to these changes.

London should aim to keep its roads safe, but the current system is overburdening drivers with stress and financial penalties, consequently leading to the paradox of creating more safety hazards on city streets.

Let's push to reassess and adjust the approaches to neighbourhood blocks and speed limits citywide. This petition seeks a balanced, fair, and practical road system for all. We plead to decision-makers to prioritise the effective flow of traffic and the mental health of London's drivers in an efficient, secure way. Please sign this petition to make our city more accessible and road-friendly.
