Northeastern University For Black Lives
The Issue
“To halt its spread, it is our obligation to work every day to embrace diversity, inclusion, and harmony,” is the statement Northeastern University made to speak out against police brutality. We say “Actions speak louder than words.”
Northeastern University prides itself as a school of inclusion and diversity, yet the black and African American student population accounts for only 3.8% of the school population - a total of 665 students according to their Fall 2019 statistics.
Located in Boston, MA, a city that has battled racism for decades, it is the university’s obligation and duty to actively support and contribute to the Black Lives Matter movement to establish unity among students and validate their experiences. As protests continue throughout Boston and the nation to advocate for change, Northeastern needs to hear our voices and ensure they are publicly announcing their allyship, rather than contributing to the police force that has been disrupting the already stifled voices.
We call upon Northeastern to make donations to the following, but not limited to, organizations on behalf of the students and the community this affects, and on behalf of the diversity, inclusion, and harmony Northeastern claims to embrace: Black Lives Matter, Campaign Zero, The NAACP’s Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Community Bail Funds, Reclaim the Block, and George Floyd Memorial Fund.
