We, (the people who have signed this petition), want to tell Reading Borough Council how much we value all of the libraries in Reading, but Battle Library in particular. Libraries are a focal point for this community. They are a diverse space where children learn to read, pensioners can go to socialise, and free internet access is provided for everyone. In a financially deprived area this is particularly important, children for example here do not have the financial means to join other paid for after school educational activities.

Our library provides access to education music, singing and language activities and books for everyone. We understand that the council faces tough economic times but we cannot afford to lose our library here in Reading West. We strongly oppose any suggestion of it being closed and our grounds for this include:

• It is the only library within walking distance of most residents in Reading West and there is free parking nearby for the few who are able to travel here by car
• The well-educated staff have built up excellent relations within the local community and the library is well regarded as a safe place to be for families, seniors and students 
• We have no real community centre and the library provides highly rated battle singing groups for parents and babies that are really well attended

• The library is a hub and a contact point for council information.
