The Issue

Who is affected?

The taxpayer and the community.

Leon County School system's decision to utilize over $10 million in property tax dollars for field upgrades, while subsequently implementing further property tax funds to restrict public access, is deeply regrettable. This unfortunate restriction not only devalues our properties but also hampers the appeal of our homes, as these community resources hold significant importance as selling points.

The increase in property taxes coupled with the diminished value of our properties is a concerning outcome of these actions by the Leon County School system. Allocating millions of dollars to prevent taxpayers from accessing facilities they contributed to is undeniably an overreach on their part.

It is crucial that we stand united in voicing our concerns and advocating for transparency, accountability, and fair use of taxpayer funds. Together, we can strive for a more inclusive approach that preserves our community's assets and ensures equitable access for all residents. Let us unite in calling for responsible stewardship and thoughtful decision-making to safeguard the interests of Leon County's taxpayers and the value of our properties.

What is at stake?

The stakes involved are significant, as the potential loss of a publicly accessible track & field means that some members of the community will be compelled to join a gym or resort to riskier exercise areas, increasing the likelihood of accidents, such as getting hit by a car. This limitation poses a particular burden for many residents in the vicinity of these schools who cannot afford a gym membership.

Moreover, there are crucial considerations for specific groups within the community. Mothers find it easier to work out at the track as they can closely watch their children, and the same applies to caregivers of individuals with special needs who require vigilant attention. Additionally, seniors greatly value the safety offered by the track, making it a cherished space for them.

Considering the health epidemic prevailing in our country and county, the prospect of restricting access to free and safe exercise areas is deeply troubling and disheartening. Preserving this publicly accessible track & field is vital for fostering the well-being and health of the community.

Why is now the time to act?

If we do not act promptly, we face the possibility of permanently losing access to a public good that we, as taxpayers, have contributed to. It is imperative to remind the Leon County School system that these facilities were made possible by our money, and as taxpayers, we rightfully deserve access to them. The school system acts as stewards of these resources, not owners, and it is crucial to assert our rights as stakeholders to ensure equitable access for the community. Delaying action may result in long-term limitations on public access, making it essential to act now to preserve our rights and the public good we have invested in.
