MAYOR PHILIP BROWN: REOPEN JOHN YEO DRIVE EXTENSION
It’s time for the City of Charlottetown to take ownership and restore this important Industrial Corridor!

We, the business owners, employees, residents, property owners and members of the Charlottetown community, are calling upon Mayor Philip Brown to show immediate leadership by accepting the transfer of the John Yeo Drive Extension to City ownership and by reopening this important roadway.

The John Yeo Drive Extension serves an important transportation function for the surrounding industrial park, businesses, employees, customers and residents who rely on this area every day. Its continued closure affects far more than the property on which the road is located—it affects the movement, accessibility and economic efficiency of an entire employment and commercial district.

#1. The City Has an Opportunity to Solve the Problem:
The current owner of the roadway is obligated to transfer the road to the City of Charlottetown.

This presents the City with an opportunity to take ownership of an important piece of transportation infrastructure, bring it to appropriate municipal standards, and reopen it for the benefit of the broader community.

We are demanding that Mayor Philip Brown to take a leadership role in bringing the parties together to establish a clear and timely path forward.

#2. Re-opening John Yeo Drive Will Help Reduce Congestion
The closure forces vehicles onto a limited number of surrounding routes, contributing to unnecessary traffic pressure and lineups around University Avenue and Mount Edward Road. Reopening the John Yeo Drive Extension would provide an efficient means of taking pressure off already busy intersections.

A functioning street network should provide motorists with choices. More connectivity means better traffic flow, fewer bottlenecks and less pressure on major intersections.

#3. Better Access Means Better Business
The surrounding industrial park is an important employment and economic area within Charlottetown. Every day, employees need to get to work, customers need to reach businesses, suppliers need to make deliveries, and commercial vehicles need to move efficiently through the area. When access is unnecessarily restricted, businesses pay the price through lost time, congestion, inefficient deliveries and frustrated customers.

Reopening John Yeo Drive would make the industrial park more connected, more accessible and more fluid. This is not simply a traffic issue. It is an economic-development issue.

#4. Public Access Requires Municipal Leadership
As Charlottetown continues to grow, the City must recognize the importance of ensuring that roadways providing meaningful public right-of-way access are properly addressed within its transportation network and, where appropriate, brought to acceptable municipal standards. Infrastructure that serves the broader public should not be allowed to remain indefinitely closed while a study to determine solutions is conducted.

CALL TO ACTION:  Our Request to Mayor Philip Brown and City Council
We urgently request Charlottetown City Council work with the current roadway owner, to:

•  Accept the transfer of the John Yeo Drive Extension into City ownership;

•  Resurface the road;

• Prioritize the re-opening of the roadway to public traffic as soon as possible;

• Recognize the importance of the roadway to the surrounding industrial park, businesses, employees and area residents;

• Incorporate this important connection into the City's long-term transportation and infrastructure plan.

The Solution is Within Reach.
The owner is obligated to transfer the roadway. The surrounding businesses and community need the connection. The transportation benefits are significant. What is required now is municipal leadership and action.

We encourage local businesses, employees, residents and property owners to add YOUR NAME to this petition and send a clear message to City Hall:

TAKE OWNERSHIP. REOPEN JOHN YEO DRIVE. REDUCE CONGESTION. SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESS.

It is time to restore this important traffic corridor and keep Charlottetown moving.
