Education students across Australia fear that their careers are over before they have even begun. It is absolutely un-reasonable that as future teachers, our ability to teach, to empower and to inspire the next generation is solely judged on how well we can complete a standardised test.

Literacy and numeracy testing for undergraduate teaching candidates has become compulsory with the introduction of the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE). Pre-service teachers who are unable to demonstrate their skills are within 30 percent of the Australian adult population are barred from teaching. Last year, over 1500 candidates failed the numeracy or literacy component of the LANTITE.

I’m a student currently enrolled in a Diploma of Education and I, as-well as my peers, feel that the LANTITE is stressful, overwhelming and un-necessary. We are limited to only three attempts at passing this test and have to pay $185 out of our own pocket for every attempt. Therefore, if we fail - all of our time, effort and money is worth nothing. This is quite alarming as according to the Australian Council for Education Research, 10-20% of students who graduate with an education degree never enter the profession.

What about those who are highly experienced and skilful in their area, say Art for example, but struggle on one component of the test? We are left feeling worthless and that our communication skills and passion for teaching is completely disregarded.

Although we are required to do a personal attribute test known as the CASPER test, it is just shrugged off and is deemed as having ‘no right or wrong answer’. We don’t even get to see our results or a notification that our score has been distributed.

On behalf of the students of Education, we are calling for the Department of Education Minister Dan Tehan to re-assess how teacher quality is tested so that factors including interpersonal skills, teaching performance and university results are considered.

The futures of Education students depend on you. Don’t let us down, Dan Tehan.
