Re-classify 'KPODS' Under the Drug Act, Not the Poison Act in Singapore
The Issue
I am reaching out as both a Singaporean citizen and a concerned family member whose loved one has fallen prey to the abuse of 'KPODS'. As it stands, an alarming loophole in our current law does not classify 'KPODS' under the Drug Act, but rather the Poison Act. This categorization not only diminishes the severity of its effects, which are indeed, equivalent to, if not more damaging than traditional illicit substances, but also provides an escape route for abusers.
My family has experienced this legal inefficiency firsthand. Despite numerous reports to the police, Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB), and the Health Sciences Authority (HSA), the best they could do was refer the case and conduct a house visit. The consequences facing 'KPODS' abusers are sadly inadequate: mere fines or, at most, a two-year imprisonment under the Poison Act.
I echo the concerns of many families across Singapore, witnessing their members turn into unrecognizable shells due to 'KPODS'. Our laws should reflect the reality of this substance's effects and take into account its accessibility, which makes it dangerously attractive to our nation's youths.
I implore the Singaporean legislative and enforcement authorities to consider this plea: re-classify 'KPODS' under the Drug Act. By doing so, we can ensure that law enforcement has the legal tools necessary to tackle its abuse and that the penalties imposed are proportionate to the consequences of its use. Let's work together to close this legal loophole, protect our families, and secure a safe future for our youth.
