Thank you to all of you that took time out of your workday to attend the RDU Board meeting yesterday! We had a great turnout. We’d also like to thank RDU board and staff for making these presentations in a public meeting. The Conservation Fund and Wake County both presented proposals to preserve the land for recreation, and Wake Stone corporation presented their proposal for turning the Odd Fellows tract into a rock quarry. Basically, the airport’s attorneys tried to suggest that turning RDU Forest into recreation land was incompatible with FAA rules to lead the board to a predetermined conclusion. This is simply not true, and was exposed as such in the Q&A session, as well as in this Facebook post by Wake County Commissioner Erv Portman. Please share his post! https://www.facebook.com/ErvforWake What we saw yesterday was an attempt to confuse the RDU board into thinking their only option is a quarry lease, using FAA regulations as the scapegoat. A sale for conservation is possible, our airport just needs to make a good faith effort to pursue that option. Huge thanks to Wake Co Commissioner Erv Portman and Durham County Chair Wendy Jacobs for weighing in on the discussion and challenging RDU. Also, Triangle Business Journal (TBJ) started a poll with a simple question, use the land for a quarry or park expansion.
