Randwick needs a dog beach plan!

Randwick needs a dog beach plan!
The issue
Randwick City Council, stands alone as the only local government area (LGA) in Australia that completely bans dogs from all beaches under its management. Madness. For dog owners in the community, this has been a longstanding issue that deeply impacts our ability to enjoy the beautiful coastal areas that we live here for.
Parks are not enough and never have enough shade. In summer, dogs need to cool off, like the dog in this picture who only has a muddy puddle. In winter, there is hardly a soul on the sand when the beaches could be attracting visitors with dogs, which in turn boosts local business in the quieter low-trade months. Randwick Council is actively blocking this seasonal buffer for local retailers.
Claims that the dog beaches would be full of dog poo are made up assumptions. The only poo you will ever see on a well managed dog beach, is wrapped in a nappy. Every other LGA in the nation has developed a plan that runs well. If Bundeena can do it, nestled in a national park, then Randwick can. Claims of rare seagrass being a problem are also irrelevant when there are so many beaches in the LGA to choose from and council has only assessed one of them.
Implementing a revised coastal plan that accommodates dog-friendly beaches will:
- Address the desires of Randwick households, 48% of which own at least one dog
- Improve the local economy, especially in winter
- Aligns with broader societal trends toward inclusivity and pet-friendliness for health and wellbeing
A well-planned approach, such as designating specific times and areas for dogs on our beaches, ensuring waste management facilities and establishing clear rules of conduct, will balance the needs of all beachgoers.
This petition urges those on Randwick City Council who recently voted AGAINST a dog plan, including the Mayor, to formally reconsider and include safe and structured access to beaches for dogs.
Let's move towards a more inclusive and welcoming community. Please lend your support by signing this petition to make a positive change for our community and our four-legged friends.
