Raise wages for working families in Tennessee
The Issue
I'm a professional working in Memphis, serving families, and this issue is very personal to me. The job I was offered, a salaried position with commission, was intended to allow me to live comfortably and provide for my family. But the unfortunate reality is that the starting wage is just the federal minimum of $7.25 per hour. Like countless others in Tennessee, this wage leaves me struggling to afford everyday essentials like rent, food, utilities, transportation, healthcare, and other basic necessities.
This is not just my struggle; it's a reality faced by thousands of working families across Tennessee. As the cost of living continues to rise, wages for workers providing essential services remain stagnant and inadequate. Tennessee families are forced to make impossible choices between basic needs, affecting their well-being and future stability.
The current minimum wage, set over a decade ago, has not kept pace with inflation. According to the Economic Policy Institute, the value of $7.25 in today's market is worth significantly less than a decade ago. A study by MIT’s Living Wage Calculator suggests that a living wage for a single adult in Tennessee is approximately $14.42 per hour, with the figure increasing depending on family size.
It's vital to advocate for a minimum wage that reflects the demands and costs of today's world. Raising the minimum wage to at least a living wage level would not only alleviate financial burdens for working families but also help stimulate the local economy. It would reduce the need for government assistance programs by allowing families to achieve financial independence and improve the quality of life for countless individuals.
