Raise the East Periwinkle Bridge More than 1FT

The Issue

As part of Sanibel Island’s ongoing reconstruction, the City is planning to replace the East Periwinkle Bridge — a vital roadway connecting the East End. This $8 million project (state and federal funded) is a once-in-a-generation infrastructure investment that should serve our community for the next 50 years or more.

However, the current plan would raise the bridge by ONLY one foot — far short of what’s needed to safely accommodate boat traffic. For decades, this bridge has posed a navigational challenge for boaters accessing over 400 nearby homes. A minimal one-foot increase will not fix that problem.

We are asking City Council to raise the roadway by approximately 3 feet while keeping the new bridge’s design intact.
This modest adjustment would:

-Greatly improve boating safety and accessibility
-Reduce future dredging and maintenance needs
-Have minimal impact on cost or project schedule
-Provide a long-term benefit for residents, visitors, and the island economy
-The Council has agreed to further explore this idea — but your voice matters.

By signing this petition, you’re showing support for a smarter, safer, and more navigable future for Sanibel Island.

Let’s make sure this 50-year investment truly meets the needs of both land and water access.
