Raise the Burden of Proof in Trials and Ensure All Evidence is Accessible to the Defendant

The Issue

From personal experience, I am painfully aware of the deficiencies that can lie within our justice system. At the tender age of 17, I was wrongly convicted of two serious crimes, despite a lack of substantiating evidence. My reputation was tarnished, my life was put on hold, and I was helpless to defend myself. Moreover, important evidence that could have vindicated me was inexplicably dismissed. We cannot ignore these dire consequences when justice is not served properly.

We seek a reform that raises the standards of proof required in criminal cases where severe character defamation or social stigmatization could result. The current "beyond a reasonable doubt" standard is evidently insufficient, having fallen short on numerous occasions. While it is designed to ensure conviction only if there is no other logical explanation, it sadly neglects to account for human bias, subjective analysis, and systemic failures.

We also demand that all evidence be made accessible to the defendant, subject to legal scrutiny. Disallowing evidence without substantial argument undermines the fairness of a trial and denies the accused the right to full self-defense.

Between June 2019 and March 2020, there were 1,336 successful appeals against conviction alone. It is believed that 1/20 people currently held in custody, are innocent and have not committed a crime. The problem is obviously a lot broader than this, they are only the statistics collected of successful appeals. However, a lot of people forget about the wrongly convicted who are suffering in silence locked away and stuck in the system. The fear of fighting back and appealing is the biggest problem for them, they fear the trauma of going back through such a straining trial and taking the risk of receiving a harsher punishment.
These people are the people that we need to help and fight for, to give them their voice back!
