The issue

In Australia, children as young as ten can be held criminally responsible for their actions. I passionately believe this age is far too low, posing significant moral and developmental concerns for our society and our children. My personal experiences and observations of Australian parents have shown me the crucial importance of allowing their children the freedom and time to develop without the harsh realities of the criminal justice system infringing on their growth.

The current age of criminal responsibility in Australia is four years below the United Nations recommended minimum age of 14. This international guideline reflects a universal understanding of the developmental stages of children, where younger kids do not possess the maturity, understanding, and reason to be held fully accountable for criminal actions. Studies have consistently shown that young children's brains are still developing, particularly in areas related to impulse control, judgment, and comprehension of consequences. Subjecting them to criminal proceedings disrupts their development, potentially creating long-lasting impacts on their mental and emotional well-being.

Globally, several developed countries have adopted the standard of 14 as the age for criminal responsibility, aligning themselves with international human rights standards and focused on rehabilitative approaches rather than punitive measures for young people. Australia must follow suit to ensure our children receive the care and consideration they deserve, fostering a legal environment that protects their rights and promotes positive outcomes for their futures.

This change is not just a legal necessity but a moral imperative. By not addressing this critical issue, we risk not only the futures of these individual children but also the moral fabric of our society. A shift in policy can prevent our children from becoming entangled in the criminal justice system, offering them opportunities for rehabilitation and support, rather than punishment.

We need to unite and demand action from our policymakers. Changing the age of criminal responsibility to 14 will align us with international standards, support developmental health in children, and set a course for a more optimistic future for Australia. Let's give our children back the childhood they deserve. Please sign this petition to raise Australia's age of criminal responsibility to 14. #GiveOurChildhoodsBack
