Raise the age limit to 18 for pediatric care in Belfast
The Issue
At 16 years old, many children are not prepared to transition to adult hospitals or services. They are still navigating the complexities of adolescence and may be dealing with mental health issues, autism, ADHD, or other developmental challenges. For these young individuals, being thrust into the adult hospital system at such a tender age can be traumatising. Adult hospitals often have environments that are not suitable for young teenagers, with instances of substance abuse, fights, and disturbances being all too common.
I am calling on the government to raise the age limit for receiving pediatric care at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Belfast from 16 to 18 years old. Allowing children to remain in familiar, child-friendly environments will provide crucial support during their critical developmental years. Organizations such as the Royal College of Pediatrics and Child Health recommend that pediatric care should be more flexible to accommodate the unique needs of young people transitioning into adulthood.
Let us create a healthcare system that acknowledges the vulnerability of 16 and 17-year-olds by allowing them to continue receiving care in a nurturing and supportive environment until they are truly ready to move on. These children deserve the chance to grow up healthy and confident in facilities that are specifically equipped to meet their needs.
Please sign this petition to urge the responsible health authorities and legislators to extend pediatric care services until the age of 18. Together, we can ensure that no child is forced into a system they are not prepared for.
Your signature can make a significant difference in protecting and supporting the young people of Northern Ireland.
