Raise British Columbia's PST vehicle luxury tax threshold from $55,000 to $75,000!
The Issue
Let's urge The Honourable the Legislative Assembly of the Province of British Columbia, in Legislature Assembled; to increase the luxury tax threshold, for Provincial Sales Tax (PST) on vehicle sold above $55,000.
— For the past 20 years any vehicle sold over $55,000 has been subjected to an increased PST tax hike. The standard PST rate of 7% incrementally increases all the way up to 10% on vehicles sold over $58,000. These threshold values were set way back April 1st of 2006 to describe a luxury purchase, and has remained unchanged for over 20 years! As a finance manager, working in the automotive industry for nearly 20 years, I've witnessed vehicle prices double in that same time frame!
With inflation eroding the value of money, this static threshold has become increasingly unrealistic in assessing what classifies as a 'luxury' vehicle. For example an entry level 'XL' 2026 single cab F-150 4X4 now breaches the $55,000 mark, inaccurately categorizing them as 'luxury'. This unfairly subjects all consumers to higher taxes on vehicles that are, in fact, commonplace by today's standards. The situation affects middle-class families and individuals who are striving to purchase efficient, safe, and family-oriented vehicles without undue financial penalty. Such as Soccer moms buying a new Honda Odyssey Van! Updating the PST vehicle luxury tax threshold to reflect current inflation is not only fair, but it's a necessary adaptation to our evolving economic landscape. I'd suggest increasing it from $55,000 to $75,000, having it revised every 10 years to properly reflect with rates of inflation.
