Jenny has Type 1 diabetes, and if your child does too you can help us all better understand standards of diabetes care in schools across the country by completing the latest annual Diabetes UK ‘Make the grade’ survey on Type 1 diabetes care in school. By telling Diabetes UK if you are happy with the care your child gets in school, they can get an idea where school care isn’t good enough. Also, the more information we have on the problems, the more evidence we have to convince Ofsted they need to start inspecting schools to see if they have medical conditions policies in place. If we can succeed in doing that, it’ll help not only children with Type 1 diabetes but the 1 million other children with a whole range of long-term medical conditions. By the way, a big thanks very much to everyone who researched whether their local schools had medical conditions policy over Christmas, hope you all had a great break! The Health Conditions in School Alliance have put together the results so far and passed them on, and sadly they show a high proportion of schools may not have a medical conditions policy at all. This is worrying as it was because of a lack of clear guidance from a policy that Jenny suffered so badly after her hypogliemic attack. That just means though it is even more important that we keep pushing Ofsted and the government to do more to keep all the children with long-term medical conditions safe in school. My kids are back at school now, and I’m determined that by the time they finish for summer we’ll have made some progress with Ofsted. And I wouldn’t mind reaching 10,000 signatures either, so please keep sharing with your friends and family!
