Raise awareness of salsa dj's repetitive mixes & promote a better social dancing scene

The Issue

This petition is not only directed at the DJs organizers/promoters, venue owners within the salsa and broader social dance scenes but also addresses the main issues affecting today’s partner dance communities. Specifically, we are calling attention to the repetitive nature of music selections that have become all too common at social dance events and especially the salsa social dance scene.

For example, while songs like "Llorarás" by Oscar D'Leon, "Sonido Bestial" by Richie Ray y Bobby Cruz, "La Fiesta de Pilito" by El Gran Combo, and "Vivir Mi Vida" by Marc Anthony are classics, their constant repetition stifles the growth and evolution of the salsa social dance scene. These songs are always appreciated but relying on them limits the diversity and vibrancy that salsa music has to offer.

Furthermore, when announcing a salsa-only event, it is crucial for DJs and promoters to ensure that salsa music is indeed the primary focus—this means avoiding the inclusion of other genres like reggae, cumbia or banda unless specifically advertised. Similarly, for events that promote both salsa and bachata, there should be clear communication regarding the ratio of genres played, such as a 3-to-1 ratio or something comparable, to set the right expectations for attendees. This issue could also be easily addressed if DJs were made aware of and trained to read the social dance crowd on any given night. For example, after playing a fast mambo, transitioning to a salsa romántica or incorporating a well-curated mix with consistent beats per minute could greatly enhance the experience for dancers.

To foster a thriving community, promoters, venue owners, and DJs must understand that success lies in offering a diverse and expansive musical experience. This includes being mindful of song selections—knowing when to play faster tracks, incorporating more romántica salsa for slower dances, and avoiding high-energy mambo late at night to give dancers a break.

This petition also acknowledges the recent price increases for social dance events, including festivals. While we understand that costs are rising across the board, any price increase should be accompanied by an improvement in the social dance environment. This includes DJs being more mindful of curating a diverse salsa playlist with greater salsa songs. Promoters, organizers, and venue owners must also work to ensure that cover charges for social dances and festivals remain fair and affordable. We ask, has the quality of the social dance experience improved with these price hikes, or has it remained stagnant?

So we encourage the exploration and celebration of salsa’s rich and diverse musical heritage with social dancing. This petition aims to raise awareness of the imbalances currently plaguing social dancing, beginning with the role of DJs and salsa event organizers and promoters.

By expanding the musical repertoire and promoting thoughtful song selection, we can breathe new life into our social dance events. The decline in social dancing can be traced back, in part, to the music—specifically, the over-reliance on repetitive tracks. This petition seeks to inspire change by encouraging DJs and promoters to create a more vibrant, fair and engaging atmosphere for all social dancers.
