PROTECT PAIN RELIEF FOR THOSE IN CHRONIC PAIN Article 3 ECHR human rights
The Issue
I was told by a clinical pharmacist, with no prior discussion or plan in place, that my pain relief, an opiate, was to be tapered and eventually stopped. I was told that if my pain worsened additional pain relief would be given. This has been retracted.
Initially I agreed until I realised that the drugs that would replace are drugs I have with had a bad reaction to or were ineffective.
I questioned the rationale.
I was force tapered, told by this clinical pharmacist that it would happen whether I liked it or not. I asked to be stabilised due to cancer surgery yet was told this was irrelevant. I was even forced a double reduction and told I would have to put up with the pain.
When I was post operative, I increased my dosage as I was in severe pain, it was also a weekend. Many clinicians had said I would need extra pain relief and informed my surgery, however this was dismissed. 5 days post operative I was in A&E due to unbearable pain, my medication, a controlled drug, was withdrawn by this clinical pharmacist for three days as I ran out and extra was denied. Not only was this unethical and cruel, but dangerous. It is well known that this can cause heart attacks and suicide.
I was urgently referred to my local pain clinic and my doctor agreed to halt my reductions until this occurred, I put in writing that I did not wish to have my pain relief managed by this c.p.however, tapers still went ahead. My wishes counted for nothing.
This c.p has caused significant pain and suffering, caused me to be hypertensive, I have reactive depression, not only has he ruined my quality of life but he has caused me to feel that life really isn’t worth living. I informed my surgery that I was feeling this way and told to phone the Samaritans.
He has almost broken my spirit.
I feel that if others are suffering like this there is a need for awareness, I strongly believe that this goes against our human rights. No one should be left in severe pain.
We as a nation have to stop this abysmal treatment, surely we should learn from the opiate crisis in the states? Too many lives were lost from inadequate pain relief, by people being force tapered or having their medication withdrawn completely.
