The Issue

Raise the asset level for Medicaid and Social Security disability (SSI and SSDI). People with disabilities, seniors, and people with low income are all impacted.

The resource limits for Medicaid and disability are $2000. This number has not changed since 1989. Accounting for inflation $2000 in 1989 is less than $850 in today's money. This means to qualify for disability it is like having to survive on no more than 850 dollars total in any checking or savings account. You can't even afford an apartment and utilities for that let alone food and all other living expenses.

These outdated rules and asset levels are what the government expects people with disabilities to get by on. This makes me so angry that no one is doing anything about this injustice and stupidity. If you lose these benefits because you "have too much money" then you are expected to pay for all bills and medical expenses and disability expenses on your own. There is no way to save money for emergencies or to better your standard of living. These regulations keep people with disabilities and the elderly trapped in poverty level.

For example, without the benefits of Medicaid just my meds (not Dr or hospital visits or therapy or insulin pump and ostomy supplies or anything else, just pills ) for 2022 was over $9000. No way I could afford that.

So I have to figure out how to "get rid" of any financial safety net or extra money in a savings account and spend all the money I make each month or I have to pay tens of thousands of dollars. This is an unjust system. It needs to be changed. There is no way for people with disabilities or the poor to even try to save to get ahead. Who came up with this mess?!? There is no way to ever get ahead with these outdated asset levels.

Raise the asset limits for Medicaid and social security disability (SSI and SSDI) to a more reasonable level in line with inflation.
