The Issue

Transitioning from military service back to civilian life is a challenge that many veterans are not prepared for. They move from a structured, regimented environment back into the unpredictable norms of civilian life. This dramatic shift can exacerbate mental health issues, leading to depression, anxiety, and other serious conditions that can go untreated. According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, approximately 17 veterans die by suicide every day. Due to stigmatization many feel like they are unable to seek the help they need. In order to create change society needs to also change their perspective on mental health because not all wounds are visible.

This petition seeks to raise advocacy for improved veteran mental health services and to initiate the development of a comprehensive transition program that specifically addresses these needs. The goal is to provide supportive structures that veterans need to adjust healthily and securely from military to civilian life.

Concrete actions include:
1. Mandatory mental health evaluations and support sessions for veterans re-entering civilian life.

2. Establishing partnerships with local organizations to provide job training, housing assistance, and medical care.
