Raila Should Retire a Statesman

The Issue

Raila should accept the IEBC's proclamation of the majority of Kenyan voters and retire a statesman.

We laud and owe a huge part of multiparty democracy to Raila Odinga. He was very instrumental in fighting against the Moi regime that had bowed the country into a one party state.
We also want to acknowledge his participation in the opposition as being at the forefront to call out corruption scandals. Without him, a lot of looting would have happened and public resources and money ended up in the pockets of a few.
We give thanks to the efforts of the Rt Hon Raila Odinga in the 2017 election whose ruling on the conduct of IEBC led to a now, more credible, viable and transparent process. An electoral body has never scored so highly in the eyes of Kenyans before like it did in the 2022 elections.
As a trickle down effect of his case at the Supreme Court in 2017, we are thankful for the peace that has been experienced before, during and even after the elections. By making sure the results are final at the polling station and that any one can take a calculator and tally for themselves the numbers, there has been peace. In other scenarios, rogue politicians would have used the absence of transparency as a tool to stir up violence. This has not happened.

In  our praise of the person of Rt Hon Raila Odinga, we would also like to state that there have been instances when the former prime minister erred. The attempt to take over power in a failed coup taints his image.
The number of lives lost as a result of that has costed the families of the followers of his ideologies. A family whose father, uncle, brother or son was sentenced to death will never heal.

There are many times that Raila has ordered his support base to go in the streets and protest. In as much as protests are allowed in the constitution, they ought to be carried out in a peaceful manner. It is unfortunate that a majority of these protests end up being chaotic and destructive. People get hurt, business premises are torn down and property worth millions destroyed as (some)of the loyalists go through a section of their planned demonstration route. The police will then be forced to disperse the crowd and things at this point get deadly. Some police officers use brute force in their attempts. We condemn that in the strongest possible terms. Live bullets have been used in many unfortunate incidences. And the consequence of a rogue police officer( who is meant to protect the life of every Kenyan ) shooting into a crowd is death or long term injuries. The history books are filled with names of men and women who were gunned down in many of these protests. Death is inevitable, but no human should call upon it earlier on another human being. And for every soul that departs this soil, this beautiful land we call our home, my heart weeps. That is another family burying a loved one. Death having been meted on one of their own.

No one should die for a politician. No one should bury their kin for a politician. No one should even get a scratch for a politician. No one should risk their life for one politician to occupy a seat.

The people of Kenya have come to realize this and are more united than ever. No one is willing to go out and demonstrate for one Raila Amolo Odinga.
"What if I go out and don't come back home to my wife and children?"
"What if I go out to protest and I lose my eye to a stone wound?"
"What if I am caned to death?"
"What do I stand to personally gain? How does my immediate family profit from my involvement in a protest that could turn violent? "
These are the questions that every Kenyan is asking.
And the resounding answer is
"I WILL NOT FIGHT MY NEIGHBOR FOR ANY POLITICIAN"
"KENYA IS BIGGER THAN ANY ONE INDIVIDUAL"
"MAISHA IENDELE KAMA KAWAIDA"

We have had a good electoral process unfold with abundance of peace. The results are up on the portal if you want to tally for yourself. Ascertain who is the country's president. Peace is all we are counting on. We want nothing else, hatutaki ma-tender za serikali. Hatutaki watoto wetu kutorejea shuleni kwa sababu ya mtu mmoja. Hatutaitikia njia zetu za kupata mlo wa kila siku kusimamishwa ili kumfurahisha mtu mmoja.

We would also like to congratulate the president elect H.E. Dr. William Samoei Ruto on his impossible win. He extended an olive branch to Raila Odinga and promised no ill-feeling to anyone who mistreated him before. We wish him God's grace and favor. But we also want him to deliver on his manifesto.

To the exiting president H.E. Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta, you have elevated Kenya to another level. The infrastructural advancements you have brought to our country will serve us eons to come. We thank you.
As a symbol of national unity, we would like to see a positive statement from you regarding your former 'foe' who is now the president-elect.

As for Raila Amolo Odinga, he should not drag his support base back into the mud. The supporters are weary and beaten in spirits. A re-run will shame him immensely. A recount of the votes will only ascertain what is already known. The most honorable.

Baba should retire an honorable figure that fashioned many of the rights we enjoy. He should continue serving the AU and travelling the world helping to nurture budding/struggling democracies everywhere.
He should sit back in his farm sipping on fresh cold lemonade, enjoying the fresh supply from his garden, laugh with his children, play football and dance with his grandchildren.
Family is certainly more fulfilling than seeking fleeting positions of power. The real wealth is not found in statehouse, it is found in the eyes of Ida Odinga. It is found in the corny and even not-funny jokes by his children. It is found in the giggles and laughs of his grandchildren playing in his compound.
He has achieved what many would want. A secure future. He has curved a path that his generation can follow with ease.

The RT. Hon Raila Odinga should retire a soldier not beaten but a man having achieved what every father would want for their kids.
He is a stateman whom we owe our democracy to.
You have been our hero baba. You have been my hero.
But I will not fight my brother because of the tension that your declaration has doomed us to. All I want is to wake up and go about my business without causing harm to no one and having not to worry that harm will befall me. ALL I WANT IS PEACE. ALL WE WANT IS PEACE!

Baba should accept the results from the IEBC and concede defeat. That will bring him more honor than the opposite.

Rt Hon Raila Amolo Odinga should retire a globally acclaimed statesman.
