The Issue

Growing up in Los Angeles, I immersed myself in the vibrant world of graffiti art. For many Angelenos, including myself, graffiti is more than just a form of expression—it is part of our cultural identity and a way to articulate our tales with colors and shapes visible to everyone. Legalizing street art on the new Metro Rail to Rail bike path along the old Slauson track line presents a unique opportunity for our community. This path could be a space where artists like me can safely and freely express our creativity without fear of legal repercussions.

Legal street art areas around the world, such as those in Vienna along the Danube River and at Mural Harbor in Linz, Austria, have proven extremely successful. These locations are not only thriving with artistic explosion but also serve as significant economic boosters. They attract thousands of tourists and invite local businesses like cafes and art supply stores to flourish. Local artists hold art tours and conduct lessons, enriching the cultural tapestry of the area.

Los Angeles, already renowned globally as a hub for innovative graffiti art after the Oceanwide Plaza became a global destination. LA is perfectly positioned to embrace this approach. The Metro Rail to Rail bike path could become a landmark destination for artists and art lovers alike, a vivid ribbon of creative expression running through our city. By legalizing designated street art areas, the city can nurture young talent and engage communities, boosting the cultural and economic vibrance of Los Angeles.

I urge the local government and relevant city authorities to consider the immense benefits this move can bring. Let us celebrate the creative energy of our city and provide a safe, respected platform for artists to contribute to the rich urban canvas of Los Angeles. Look to the small spaces made available to us at Venice and how cherished those are by Angelenos of all ages.

By signing this petition, you will help create a future where street art is legally recognized and appreciated in Los Angeles, offering a safe and thriving space for artists. Your support will ensure that Angeleno voices are etched into the heart of our cityscape, advocating creativity, diversity, and community engagement. Let's work together to paint a brighter future for Los Angeles. Sign now to support legalizing street art on the Metro Rail to Rail bike path.
