Petition updateFire & Expel Peter Cvjetanovic from the University of Nevada, RenoControversy continues at UNR - 3 incidents in 3 months

Criticism continues as the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) condemns racism without also taking appropriate action to prevent racist incidents from happening again. In August, they condemned Peter Cvjetanovic's participation in the Charlottesville marches but also refused to take appropriate action against the current student and employee. On September 24, it was an incident involving an officer at UNR who was recorded on his own body camera talking about a black graduate student saying, “I’m just going to shoot him if this goes sideways because fuck that.” Most recently, in October, the University has condemned the action of a white UNR cop who wore a Colin Kaepernick "costume" for Halloween, mocking the size of his nose and dressing up as the black athlete with a sign that reads "will stand for food". What is confusing is how the university can strongly condemn his behavior while also failing to take any action against him. Usually, a person falls on one of two sides of the issue: 1) a person sees how the behavior is wrong, and thus wants appropriate action to make sure it does not happen again; or, 2) a person fails to see how the behavior is wrong and thus wants no follow-up action or consequences for the behavior. UNR falls in the middle, recognizing that these incidents that keep happening at their school are bad, but failing to take action to prevent them from happening again. In a classic example of wanting to "have their cake and eat it too", UNR talks about promoting 'racial diversity' on campus to increase applicants, but they do not want to take the necessary action to foster a safe environment that makes that happen. Back in August, the argument to keep Peter employed at UNR was that if his actions off campus do not interfere with his work on campus, then they have no basis to fire him. In the case of the officer, doesn't his mockery of a black peaceful protester interfere with his duty as an officer? Keep in mind that the same cop who is mocking Colin for exercising his right to free speech is the same cop who is supposed to be protecting all students, regardless of race, on campus while on duty. Would you trust this officer to have your best interests in mind if you were a non-white student? Here's another way to look at it: President Marc Johnson wants to create a more 'inclusive' campus for all students. But with the three incidents that have occurred in the last three months, would you trust President Johnson and upper administration at UNR to keep you safe? Edit - while this petition and post is a criticism of the upper administration (Marc Johnson in particular) at the school, it is important to note that impartiality on these contentious issues and racism does not reflect the views of the entire student body nor all the faculty and staff at UNR. My intention is not to paint every single person affiliated with the school as a racist or a bad person. My intention is to bring forward these issues for discussion and encourage the upper administration to not be impartial and choose a side. There are a lot of great people at UNR who are working hard to challenge things such as racism and injustice on campus and their work is very much appreciated.
