RACIST residential school laws reinstated by Canadian judge

The Issue

In what seems like a return to the dark days of residential schools, a Supreme Court judge is imposing colonial restrictions on indigenous families, preventing them from participating in their sacred ceremonies (in most indigenous culture hunting/asking for a life, is a ceremony). Imagine raising your family rooted in customs and traditions passed down through generations, only to have them restricted under the guise of law, with no credible reasoning except outdated, colonial views.

Our supreme Court judge "unjustice Duncan" made a supreme Court order a few years ago under the direction of my ex for safety of the children that they are not to be taken hunting, shoot (even a bb gun), learn gun safety (even though there's guns in lots of the homes the kids go to and again even with a bb gun) and that I'm not allowed to give traditional medicines like peppermint tea for stomach aches unless approved. Since that order my ex and I have both been caught secretly harvesting animals and keeping the ceremony a secret like it's residential school days and the potlatch law is in affect. The days where ceremonies and hunting were illegal so first nations had to go into the bush and hide them from the Indian agents and children were not allowed to attend because they were not good at keeping secrets. Just like this situation. So are we just repeating racist outdated laws?

Feb, 2026, my ex and I agreed in court that we should be able to teach them to hunt, gun safety and how to shoot but the judge refused both of us ( both post secondary graduates, first nations scholars, government employees, avid subsistence hunters, with no criminal record etc etc)! I also asked for a list of traditional medicines she is banning and she could not provide one. So now do my ex and I have to continue to hide our ceremonies and harvesting from what feels like the modern Indian agent?  PLEASE HELP!

My ex and I are restricted to take our children hunting or to even teach them gun safety even though we have guns in the home. Even though it goes against the royal proclamation of 1763! No reason given. No bad experiences, nothing. This reminds me of how the Indian agents used to restrict hunting to first nations to try and starve them. The courts once abolished similar oppressive laws precisely because they were deemed racist and unconstitutional.

It's unfathomable to witness this kind of injustice and unfairness, especially in an era when Canada ought to be healing and moving towards an inclusive future for all its citizens. This is a crucial moment for us as a community to stand up and say no to judicial decisions that disregard Indigenous rights and perpetuate systemic racism.

Sign this petition and let’s make it clear to the lawmakers and judges of our country that true reconciliation demands action, respect, and recognition of Indigenous rights. We need your support to stop the colonial restrictions on indigenous ceremonies. The time for change and justice is now. #honor treaties
