Rachel Reeves - It's time to tax UK cannabis
The Issue
Cannabis is the most widely used illicit drug in the UK with around 7 million regular consumers. Adults risk losing their job, home, travel rights and potentially going to prison for up to 14 years for possessing, selling or growing cannabis.
It's time the government started making money from cannabis rather than wasting money trying to eradicate it - which is never going to happen.
More than a dozen countries have legalised and regulated sales to adult with an ID. This has created consumer safety regulations and imposes taxes that benefit the economy.
With a legalised cannabis market, harm reduction information and education can be given by schools, colleges and public health authorities. Furthermore, dangerous products laced with contaminants (glass, metal, sand, salt, sugar, pesticides) can be prevented from reaching consumers causing health damage to individuals.
Organised crime gangs profit roughly £2 billion a year in untaxed cannabis sales. The police spend a further £2 billion fighting the war on drugs. The UK has approximately 1000 people in prison for cannabis related offences costing taxpayers around £50,000 a year - all for a victimless crime.
The tax and savings from legalising cannabis sales to adults in the UK could positively impact the UK economy whilst making the streets safer for young people.
Cannabis Social Clubs offer a way to regulate cannabis sales to adults without breaking the 1961 United Nations Drug Conventions.
By keeping things the same we harm Britain's future, the economy and let down people who don't deserve to be criminalised over a plant. Change would see the UK enter a new global market with great consequences for the economy, work opportunities and creating safer communities.
The UK needs this discussion. Please sign this petition to persuade Rachel Reeves to meet with campaigners on this matter.
