Thank you to everyone who signed the petition, (which had over 1800 signatures) and sent emails to support Queens College students who felt concerned for their safety and well-being and as such, called for the expulsion of Anthony Abicca. Unfortunately, they are not expelling him because of "freedom of speech" They go on to say more in their statement on their Instagram page.

I would like to add that Anthony Abicca's actions and use of racial slurs directed at people of color and homophobic slurs, goes way beyond "freedom of speech." He is expressing a great disdain towards these groups of people, who all attend Queens College. "Freedom of speech" does not excuse racism or hate.
It's definitely sad to know that a student with this kind of behavior and use of racial slurs still attends my school. But all Queens College students are now aware of Anthony Abicca's actions and use of racial slurs, he may get to stay on campus but he definitely won't have any peace of mind. People like this, I really have no words for, but I definitely will not tolerate it.
I'm proud of myself for standing up and saying something! This has been a very stressful, emotionally draining, challenging experience. But I would do it all again because I learned so much from this experience.
My take away from this is that, my voice matters. I don't have to sit around or brush off things that should be addressed. Speaking up, taking action; this is so important. If you experience a person like Anthony Abicca, who is bold enough to use racial slurs, and you have the opportunity, speak up and explore meaningful ways to take action. Obviously, the world is filled with people like this, and I'm sure more exist on my college campus. But I will apply this way of thinking in this experience: if you see something, say something.
I'm glad I said something and I will continue to speak up!
Thanks again everyone!
Please take care of yourself, honor yourself, and value your voice.
