Last week, I travelled from Biloela to Brisbane to take Priya and Nades’ story to shareholders at the Qantas AGM.
Outside, Priya's friend Vashini and I told refugee advocates how Border Force used a private charter to force this beautiful family from central Queensland to Melbourne and across the country to Perth, where emergency legal action saw them taken off a deportation flight with minutes to spare.
Inside the AGM, I exercised my right as a Qantas shareholder to speak in favour of a resolution calling on Qantas to review their involvement in the forced transportation of asylum seekers.
As I stood to speak, my body was filled with adrenalin - a normal reaction to fear. It was terrifying to take on men with such power, but I could only think of Priya, Nades, Kopika and Tharunicaa, who must have been experiencing the same response when they were forced onto planes to be taken to dangers unknown.
I told Qantas CEO Alan Joyce and the Qantas Board of Directors how Border Force separated two-year-old Kopika and nine month old Tharunicaa from their parents on that first charter flight from central Queensland to Melbourne.
I said that I understood Qantas also allows Border Force to use its planes, pilots and crew to transport asylum seekers against their will. I asked if Qantas would allow Border Force to separate children from their parents on these flights.
Incredibly, the Chair of the Board would not take a clear position, only saying: "I'm not aware of the Government's desire to separate children and transport children separately."
Big institutional shareholders voted against the resolution on advice it could damage Qantas' government business. But now, an international federation representing almost 700 transport unions globally has called on airlines to refuse to assist in forced deportations.
On Friday next week, refugee advocates will be speaking up for Priya and Nades at the Melbourne headquarters of Qantas subsidiary Jetstar. I can't be there, but I'd love for you to join them and show that the only place that Priya, Nades, Kopika and Tharunicaa should be flown is home to Biloela: www.facebook.com/events/739400039738075
