Put Up Penalty Boards at Marketplaces! Protect Street Vendors, Inform Consumers

(Demand The Street Vendors Act 2014 to be Followed)

Imagine a life filled with uncertainty. Every day, you fight for your space on the streets, your livelihood teetering on the edge of official regulation and informal hurdles. This is the reality for millions of India's street vendors, hardworking individuals who contribute to the vibrant and thriving existence of our communities. Yet, their path is often shadowed by a persistent lack of access to justice.

To the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India:

We, the undersigned, petition the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India, to take immediate action to ensure the implementation of The Street Vendors Act 2014 in all marketplaces and vending zones across the country. Specifically, we demand the mandatory display of boards at all such locations, clearly outlining the offenses listed in the Act and the corresponding penalties for violating them.

Why is this important?

The Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2014 was enacted to protect the rights and livelihoods of street vendors, while also regulating their activities for a smooth and organized urban environment. However, many vendors remain unaware of their rights and responsibilities under the Act, and lack of proper information often leads to misunderstandings and conflicts with authorities. The absence of easily accessible information about offenses and penalties also creates an environment of ambiguity and potential harassment for vendors. Without clear awareness, vendors may be more vulnerable to unfair treatment and extortion by officials.

How will penalty boards help?

Displaying boards at marketplaces and vending zones with clear and concise information about offenses and penalties will have several positive outcomes:

Empowerment of vendors: Vendors will be better informed about their rights and responsibilities, allowing them to confidently conduct their business without fear of harassment or unfair treatment.
Transparency and accountability: Clearly outlining the law will promote transparency in the enforcement process and hold authorities accountable for their actions.

Reduced conflict and tension: Increased awareness can prevent misunderstandings and conflicts between vendors and officials, fostering a more harmonious environment in marketplaces.
Therefore, we urge the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs to:

Issue a directive to all states and union territories mandating the display of penalty boards at all marketplaces and vending zones.

Develop standardized and easily understandable boards that clearly list offences and penalties in local languages.

Regularly monitor the implementation of this directive and take necessary action to ensure compliance.

By taking these steps, the Government of India can ensure that The Street Vendors Act 2014 is effectively implemented, protecting the rights of street vendors while promoting a well-managed and vibrant urban environment.

Sign this petition and stand with our nano-entrepreneurs, the street vendors! Together, let's make our marketplaces and vending zones fair, informed, and thriving spaces for all.
