Put the First Land Survey Monument on the Moon

The Issue

Land surveying has quietly shaped nearly every part of our world. From the first boundary lines that defined our communities, to the great expeditions that mapped continents, to the precise measurements that make modern construction and navigation possible — surveyors have always been at the foundation of exploration and progress. Yet for all its importance, surveying often goes unseen, its contributions hidden beneath the landmarks it makes possible.

The California Young Surveyors Network is launching the Monument the Moon campaign to change that. This campaign is about more than placing an artificial monument on the lunar surface — it’s about telling the world that before humanity can build, explore, and thrive in new frontiers, we must first measure, map, and mark them. A survey monument on the Moon would be both practical and symbolic: a reminder that exploration starts with precision, and a tribute to the profession that makes progress possible.

Just as the first monuments on Earth anchored our understanding of land and space, a monument on the Moon would stand as a marker of human achievement — a bridge between the explorers of the past, the pioneers of today, and the dreamers of tomorrow. It would shine a light on a profession too often overlooked, while inspiring the next generation of surveyors, engineers, scientists, and spacefarers.

By supporting this campaign, you join a grassroots movement led by the next generation of surveyors to bring visibility to an essential profession and to make history together. Monument the Moon is not just about surveying — it’s about exploration, legacy, and reminding the world that every great journey begins with a single point marked in the ground.

Our Plan

Every great exploration begins with a first step. Monument the Moon starts here on Earth — through grassroots support and collective action.

Our first milestone is building awareness. With your participation, we will:

Grow a community of supporters through sign-ups and social media engagement.

Use our Change.org petition to demonstrate broad public support for placing the first land survey monument on the lunar surface.

Amplify our message by sharing stories of surveying’s role in exploration and inspiring the next generation of surveyors, engineers, and space pioneers.

As momentum builds, this campaign will evolve from awareness to influence — connecting with industry leaders, educators, and mission planners. But it all begins with you. Grassroots participation is the foundation of our mission to spotlight surveying and make history on the Moon.
