Our voice is making a difference!
At the national Remembrance Day ceremony in Ottawa, last Friday, the Canadian flag retained the position of honour for the first time in memory. The blue flag of the governor general did not replace it on the highest flagpole, as federal rules insist it must--an act which annually dishonours the nation.
This screen capture shows the GG’s flag was hoisted on a lower pole, allowing the Canadian flag to take precedence. This is precisely one of the changes we’ve been calling for: That the 30-odd flags of royals and their representatives may fly, but never replace nor fly superior to the Maple Leaf.
It is heartening to see what happened at the National War Memorial on November 11, but it contradicts the federal rule, which has not changed: Flags of the GG, all 10 lieutenant-governors, and all members of Britain’s royal family officially take precedence ahead of the Canadian flag. That’s wrong.
And so this petition’s work is not done. Let us repeat the call to put the Canadian flag first in its own country. Share this with your social circles. When we reach 1,000 signatures (only 70 to go, at this moment), it will become visible to even more people.
