Ottawa says all flags of the monarch in England and their proxies take precedence ahead of the Canadian flag. That means the Maple Leaf is removed from the place of honour (the highest position, or on the left-most pole) to a lesser position, or it's surrendered completely.
So, when Prince Charles joined Governor General Mary Simon and Newfoundland’s Lieutenant-Governor Judy Foote--each one representing the queen--there were THREE flags to dishonour our proud national emblem at the same time.
One is too many. But three at once! The Canadian flag should never capitulate or be forced from the place of honour in its own country, no matter who happens to be visiting. Let royal and viceregal flags fly AFTER the flag of the nation its monarch serves, and not the other way around. Other Commonwealth realms (with the same queen) put their national flags first. It’s time we did, too.
