The Issue

Every year, I hear heartbreaking stories of young athletes in Southern California who have to make tough decisions that they shouldn't have to face. As someone who runs a volleyball club, I am often approached by high school players who are deeply distressed because they feel pressured to join their high school coach's club in order to earn a spot on the varsity team or receive more playing time. The emotional toll it takes on these kids is significant, as they either leave my club in tears or endure a less-than-favorable high school coaching experience due to these coercive practices.

This issue arises from a significant conflict of interest that emerges when high school volleyball coaches also work for or manage club teams. The idea that young athletes are almost forced into joining their high school coach’s club is fundamentally unfair, transforming what should be a passion and an opportunity for growth into a money-driven agenda. These kids end up suffering through a process that should be all about their development and love for the sport.

It’s time to make a change. We need to push for regulations that restrict high school volleyball coaches from simultaneously working at or managing club teams. By doing so, we can return the focus to the well-being and advancement of student athletes, ensuring that their high school sports experience is both fair and enjoyable, untainted by unfair pressures or monetary interests.

Other states have successfully managed such conflicts of interest with guidelines and restrictions tailored to ensure that high school sports maintain their educational and developmental mission. Southern California and, indeed, the entire state, should follow suit to protect our youth and preserve the integrity of high school sports.

By signing this petition, you are standing with me to advocate for fairness and opportunity in high school volleyball. Let’s make a concerted effort to put the athletes first and eliminate the undue influence of club affiliations on their high school sports journey. Your support is vital in bringing about this necessary change. Sign and share this petition to safeguard the futures of these dedicated athletes and keep the spirit of the game alive.
