The Issue

Watership Down by Richard Adams is a cherished classic that has inspired and touched the hearts of many with its story of courage, survival, and nature.

We are asking the Bank of England to honour this beloved tale by featuring one of the iconic Watership Down rabbits, appropriately named Fiver, on the next £5 note.

This would be in line with the decision to use pictures of British wildlife on the new Bank of England notes and would also pay tribute to a piece of British literary heritage and recognize the extraordinary cultural impact Watership Down has had over the decades.

The introduction of a Watership Down rabbit on British currency would not only celebrate literary genius but also promote awareness of the themes the book champions—community, leadership, and environmental stewardship. This can stimulate discussions on the importance of preserving nature whilst reaching a new generation of thinkers and dreamers.

Considering its enduring popularity, Watership Down remains vital in British literary studies and is loved by readers young and old. Implementing this idea is feasible, and the time for action is now—what better way to commemorate the 50th anniversary of its publication in 2022 and the continued celebration by fans across the globe?

As the creator and host of the Watership Down Podcast, I'm coincidentally celebrating its 5-year anniversary—a journey that has connected fans from all over the world.

Please join us in this cultural movement to honor and celebrate Watership Down by signing this petition. Let's add Fiver onto our currency, and leave a legacy as profound as the story itself. Sign and share to make this dream a reality.
