Put Better Controls on Shared Bikes in Sydney

Put Better Controls on Shared Bikes in Sydney
The issue
Shared bikes were introduced to make getting around Sydney easier and more sustainable.
But without proper controls, they are now creating widespread disruption, safety risks, and accessibility issues across our communities.
Across suburbs like Erskineville, Redfern, and beyond, footpaths, station entrances, and building access points are being regularly blocked by large clusters of bikes.
Many are left toppled across walkways, dumped in inappropriate locations — even inside buildings — with helmets missing, abandoned, or not used at all.
This is not just frustrating — it’s unsafe.
Recently, near Carriageworks in Redfern on an already busy day, a woman in an electric wheelchair was unable to pass through the street due to the sheer number of bikes obstructing access.
This is a clear failure in ensuring safe and inclusive public spaces.
Despite repeated reports, the response remains temporary and reactive.
Bikes are moved, only for the problem to return again and again.
Operators claim to be working with authorities, while responsibility continues to be unclear — leaving residents to deal with the consequences.
This petition is not about removing shared bikes.
It’s about putting proper controls in place so the system works for everyone.
We are calling for:
- Designated parking zones with enforcement
- Limits on the number of bikes per area
- Fines or penalties for improper parking
- Stronger accountability for operators
- Clear coordination between Council and State Government
Sydney deserves a system that supports sustainable transport without compromising safety, accessibility, and public amenity.
If you believe in safer, more accessible streets, please support this petition.
