Put a 4 Way Stop Sign & Pedestrian Crosswalk in front of Movement at Walnut & 33rd in RiNO
The issue
Hi, I am someone who works in the neighborhood and wants to put in a 4 way stop sign and cross walk to help keep people safe.
This intersection is in the busy RiNO neighborhood in Denver, Colorado. The spot in question is within one block of of a busy climbing gym, a hip cafe & bar, and too many apartment complexes to count. At one of the corners of this intersection construction has just begun on another apartment complex, lots of big trucks coming in and out. Needless to say, there are a lot of people around. My biggest concern is how many crashes have occurred here and how unsafe many feel turning onto Walnut from 33rd. With the parked cars in this packed neighborhood, many can't see oncoming traffic. This has already resulted in multiple crashes there over just the past few months, many of which were not reported and recorded.
When I reached out to the city, my request for a a 4-way sign was denied because it didn't meet the criteria for a 4-way stop sign.
"The criteria is set by a national traffic engineering standard called the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. The warrant for an all-way stop requires 5 correctable crashes in 12 months, this intersection has had 6 crashes in the last 3 years. The warrant also requires a traffic volume of 200 units per hour for 8 hours on the minor street (33rd). Data collection in 2021 shows a daily volume of 1300 so this criteria is also not met."
So, despite my own personal beliefs that this recorded information is not up to date with the influx of people over the last two years, here I am asking you to sign this petition to put in a 4 way stop and crosswalk and help the community feel a little safer crossing the road.
Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.
