The Issue

We are deeply outraged by the illegal killing of a federally protected gray wolf near Sisters, Oregon. This tragic act has not only robbed a pack of a vital member but has also dealt a devastating blow to conservation efforts aimed at restoring gray wolf populations in the region.

On March 10, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, Oregon State Police Fish and Wildlife Division, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service responded to a report of a dead adult male gray wolf. This wolf was the breeding male of the Metolius pack.

His unlawful death leaves the pack’s pups vulnerable, as wolf packs rely on both parents for survival. Without their father’s protection and ability to help provide food, the pups now face a significantly lower chance of survival, threatening the future of this critical wolf pack.

We urge authorities to pursue a full investigation and seek the maximum penalty under the law to ensure accountability. Strong action must be taken to deter future poaching, protect Oregon’s gray wolves, and uphold the integrity of federal wildlife protections.
