Purebred Dog Advocates Oppose Florida SB 1830 and HB 1481
The Issue
I am a proud parent of a young adult who has been immersed in the discipline of showing AKC confirmed purebred dogs for the past eight years. This experience has taught her responsibility, compassion, and respect for the integrity of preserving breed standards. Yet, the legislation currently being introduced in Florida now threatens this world we've come to cherish. This anti-preservation bill ostensibly appeases backyard breeders and large scale rescue operations who might not always prioritize quality breeding while engaging in the purchase of mixed breed dogs to re-sell for profit. Politically driven by those profiting from poorly bred, mixed dogs, it encourages conduct detrimental to the proper nurturing of quality purebred dogs, like those that my family takes pride in showing. According to the National Animal Interest Alliance, responsible breeders contribute to the preservation of species and prevention of unwanted genetic maladies usually associated with bad breeding practices (2018 Report). Such questionable legislation could undermine these efforts, which is why we must solidly say no to it. Responsible breeding is expensive, it requires dedication to socialization and training along with genetic testing and imaging to make sure your future generations will be free from disease and sound in body and temperament. Responsible breeders will always take in one of their dogs rather than allow them to end up in a shelter. One trip to a rescue or shelter will show you that the dogs there are not from responsible preservation breeders like those in the purebred dog community. Most AKC Parent clubs have a foster and rescue network that works to provide any purebred dog in their breed a foster home while actively vetting applicants who are looking to adopt. We recently had a Florida breeder pass away, who had three older dogs, our breed club immediately picked up the dogs from the family and housed them, obtained and paid for veterinary care, including dental work, vaccinations, and routine examinations. All three dogs were adopted and transportation was provided for them to their new homes. Responsible breeders are part of a community that supports each other and steps in to make sure the dogs well-being is first priority and will go to great lengths to keep them out of a shelter situation. The future of the responsible breeding community along with many vulnerable purebred breeds are at stake. Join us and say no to the anti-preservation breeder legislation. Your signature can help protect the rights of responsible breeders. Show you oppose SB 1830 and HB 1481 when you sign this petition today.
