OWNER OF GOLDEN GROVE KENNELS CHARGED WITH 35 COUNTS ANIMAL CRUELTY! Radcliff woman charged after 21 dogs found dead at home
BY GINA CLEAR THE NEWS-ENTERPRISE
 May 6, 2023

A Radcliff woman has been charged in a case of animal cruelty after police say 21 dogs in her care were found dead in and around her home.

Morgan Jade Barrick, 26, is facing 35 charges of second-degree animal cruelty after police came to her residence on Hallmark Place in Radcliff on Friday with a search warrant and found the deceased animals.

Radcliff Police Chief Jeff Cross said his officers were acting on a tip from a dog owner who had tried to communicate with Barrick but was unsuccessful. After going to the home and detecting odor of decaying carcasses, Cross said officers obtained a search warrant.

Police reported 35 dogs in total of various breeds were not provided adequate food and water with 14 dogs, 12 of which are puppies, being found physically in jeopardy, an arrest citation said.

“The animals still alive were skinny to the point that bony structures such as rib cages, elbows and hips could easily be identified,” the citation read. “There was a very small amount of food located inside the residence and no water bowls were found inside the residence.”

Of the dead animals, 19 were found in the home and two were in a white van, registered to Barrick, parked outside the residence, according to the citation.

Numerous pieces of carcasses were found, some of which had been eaten by other animals or were in garbage bags, and not included in the count of deceased animals, the citation said.

The two dogs in the van were in a kennel and “had been wrapped up in plastic bags with some type of white substance on the carcasses,” the citation said.

Although the kennel was covered with a blanket, a strong odor of decomposition was “emanating from the vehicle,” it said.

Hardin County Animal Care and Control seized the remaining animals, the citation said. Officials from animal control would not comment on the case.

The case has left dog owner Maryann Carter-Laventure, of Palmer, Massachusetts, wondering how it could have happened after Barrick is facing a second-degree animal cruelty charge in the February 11, 2022, death of her Dogue de Bordeaux, Cyrus. Cyrus was 14 months old.

“A little over a year ago, I boarded my dog with her because she was a show handler,” she said. “I sent him to her for handling

Cyrus was found underweight with a burnt abdomen, nose and testicles, Carter-Laventure said. She said the dog was 146 pounds at drop off to Barrick and when she collected his body he was 96 pounds after two necropsies was performed.

When I told her I was coming to get him, she ended up feeding him a large meal,” Carter-Laventure said of Barrick. “He ended up bloating and he died.” While in Barrick’s care, Carter-Laventure said she would regularly ask for photos of Cyrus but would not get any.

“I didn’t know his condition,” she said, adding she was paying Barrick $600 a week to board and care for the dog while Barrick was showing him. While Carter-Laventure tried to inform others of her dog’s case, she wasn’t able to prevent other dogs from suffering the same fate

Carter-Laventure is convinced Barrick's actions caused the death of her dog.

Second-degree animal cruelty is a Class A misdemeanor, punishable by up to 12 months in jail, if convicted.

“Unfortunately, in Kentucky, it’s a misdemeanor,” Carter-Laventure said. “So all of the charges she was charged on yesterday were a misdemeanor.”

Carter-Laventure said the possible penalty is too lenient.

**Barrick’s next appearance, a pretrial conference, in the ongoing case is May 31 in Hardin District Court, according to court records. On the new charges, she is expected to be arraigned Monday morning, according to jail records.

Barrick was released Friday night on a $2,500 cash bond.

PLEASE SIGN THIS PETITION SO THE HARDIN COUNTY JUDGE KNOWS WE ARE FOLLOWING THIS CASE AND WILL BE WATCHING MAY 31ST.  THIS MONSTER NEEDS TO SERVE MAX TIME FOR THE 35 CHARGES!!
