Puerto Rico is paradise. But, hundreds of thousands of people on this island, US citizens on US soil haven’t had running water for weeks and some with inconsistent water for years or decades.
No water to shower. No water to flush a toilet. No water to brush your teeth or wash your hands. Elderly residents, families with young children, small business owners, Locally owned Airbnb’s are all sitting and waiting, with zero communication from the government about when it will come back on or what the plan is long term.
This isn’t a one-time emergency. This is daily life for a lot of Puerto Ricans.
The island’s median age is 7 years older than the US average. That means our grandparents, our tíos and tías, abuelos and abuelas, our elderly neighbors, they are the ones most impacted when the water goes out with no warning and no end in sight. And when it does come back, no one knows for how long.
We are US citizens. This would not be tolerated anywhere else in this country.
Who We Are
We are EXC International, a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit with roots in Puerto Rico founded by Puerto Ricans and a deep commitment to the communities being failed by broken infrastructure.
We are Puerto Ricans by blood, by love, and by choice who refuse to sit and wait for a government that has consistently ignored this crisis.
We are already on the ground. Our property in el campo de Patillas, Casita de Cruz, currently has water and is available for those who need it.
But emergency hospitality is not a long term solution. Rainwater harvesting is.
What We Plan on Building
Rainwater harvesting is not new technology. It is ancient, proven, and works beautifully in a place that receives 63–71 inches of rainfall per year like Puerto Rico. This isn’t a theory. This isn’t a concept we read about in a report. We have direct connections to people who have implemented rainwater harvesting systems at scale in Bali, Indonesia, one of the most successful models of community water independence in the world. We have seen firsthand what it looks like when a community stops waiting for a government to turn the tap on and takes water sovereignty into their own hands. Bali gets roughly the same annual rainfall as Puerto Rico. The technology is proven. The results are real. And there is absolutely no reason Puerto Rico a US territory with access to federal funding, nonprofit infrastructure, and a passionate diaspora, cannot do the same thing and do it better. We are not guessing. We know this works.
Our plan is simple:
— Short term: Get emergency funds and resources directly to affected families and communities right now
— Long term: Install potable rainwater capture and harvesting systems for homeowners island wide, starting with the southeast coast where the crisis hits hardest and organizations are fewest
These systems collect rooftop rainwater into cisterns, giving families a reliable backup water supply for toilets, laundry, cleaning, and washing, independent of PRASA, independent of the government, independent of whatever excuse comes next.
No one is doing this at island scale for individual homeowners.
What Your Donation Does
Every dollar donated to EXC International goes directly toward:
• Emergency water and supply relief for affected families
• Sourcing and installing rainwater collection systems for low-income homeowners
• Building a sustainable rainwater capture.
We are not a bureaucracy. We are people who care, with a plan, and the ability to move fast.
