All pubs, restaurants, cafe’s and public places have a disabled toilet.
The Issue
I am writing this petition on behalf of my mum and all other people who need to access to disabled toilet.
In the last 8 months our life as a family has changed since my mum has unexpectedly suffered 2 strokes 3 days apart. Spending 11 weeks in hospital in the middle of a pandemic. My mum is only 54 years of age and has worked all her life right up to the day before it happened. A wife, a mum of two, nan of 5, and an amazing sister, daughter and friend. As very busy and active woman her life has come to a complete stop. This stroke has Caused brain damage, speech impediment and mobility issues. Meaning we need to have the access to a disabled toilets for our family to still enjoy days out and meals as a family.
I am shocked to see in the recent months as pubs/restaurants/cafe’s have re opened the lack of them that have access for a disabled toilet.
There has been an occasion where my dad and mum went out together. My mum is not able to use the toilet alone. The cafe wouldn’t allow my dad to go into the ladies with my mum to assist her on the toilet. Would not offer to close them so he could help her. Meaning they had to go elsewhere. The use of a disabled toilet would of meant they could go in together, and with a stroke causing bladder issues my mum being left uncomfortable whilst they find a toilet.
My mum who now after 7/8months of intense physio and recovery with difficulty walks with a walking stick, she can use this for about 200 Yards at maximum(on a good day) before having to go in a wheelchair. We went to a pub as a family to get to the toilet had to get up 3 steps ( doesn’t sound like much to you but is like walking up Snowden to her) to get to a toilet that wasn’t even at a level a disabled person could reach.
3rd occasion my dad had to stand outside of the toilets and ask of anyone to wait a moment so my mum could go the toilet with the door open so I could help lower her down and assist her on the toilet and back up. Disabled toilets are at a certain height making it easier for someone with less mobility to lower themselves. When we have to go to a normal toilet my mum is wincing/crying in pain and discomfort trying to lower herself down.
It’s actually less than 40% of pubs/restaurants that have a disabled toilet.
The equality act of 2010 requires minimum standards. An individual disabled person or carer could argue that there was no reasonable adjustments as required by law in relation to them.
This needs to change. They deserve the rights to go to a pub/restaurants/cafe/days out as much as the next person.
I am asking you from our family to yours, please please make this mandatory. This could happen to anyone at any time please help us a family. This has changed our families life forever.
