Brother & Sister Parole Officers,

Happy Independence Day! This is one of the most important updates we have ever shared with you as this is a game changer in our fight to leave PEF and join New York’s Independent Law Enforcement Union, NYSCOPBA.

PEF has been using scare tactics to try and convince members not to opt out of the union. For example, PEF has been informing members that if they leave the union, they will no longer have legal representation against any disciplinary action from DOCCS.

While it's true that opting out of a labor union means the union may no longer be required to provide certain services to you, such as grievance or disciplinary representation, PEF is conveniently failing to inform members that there are other options for legal representation for grievance or disciplinary action.

The American Public Servants' Association (APSA) is an alternative for New York State government employees. It is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to representing its members whom have chosen not to join the union that represents their job. APSA provides members with personalized legal support, answers to contract and personnel questions and discounts with national retailers.

APSA's vision is that public sector employees are fairly represented against any unjust and illegal action, discipline or termination; that they are free to associate with the group of their choice; and that individuals can receive help with employment without being forced to support politics or policies they may disagree with.

The APSA Legal Network includes attorneys across New York State specializing in employment law. Should the need arise, APSA will connect you with one of those attorneys.

APSA Legal Network lawyers will provide legal counsel and representation for workplace employment issues (including disciplinary and grievance procedures) up to and including representation at a hearing. APSA also provides supplemental coverage for law enforcement.

For more detailed information about APSA, please click on their website https://www.americanpublicservantscf.org or call (1.866.277.2123).

In solidarity,

New York State Parole Officers
