We need a few more signatures on this petition before we send it to Premier John Horgan and the four applicable BC NDP Ministers.

The 531ha. Duncan River Ancient Cedars protected area proposal captures the last remaining remnant ancient forest remaining in the 28 mile or 45 km valley bottom Reservoir behind the Duncan Dam.

This area is unique and relatively easy to experience. Visiting this magical grove gives people the opportunity to connect with nature and gain a deep understanding about the magnificent web of life interconnecting everything. Memories of experiences like this last a lifetime and have a profound effect on how people relate to our too-small planet.

In 1995 the West Kootenay-Boundary Land Use Plan set aside over 12% of the region in large parks named Goal 1 protected areas. In 1998 a local process to identify small sites for protection was established, under the West Kootenay-Boundary Protected Area Strategy (PAS) "Special Features”, Goal 2 sites ranging in size from 1 ha. to 715 ha. Special Features were defined as ‘elements or groups of elements made special by their rarity, scarcity and unique significance in intrinsic or perceived worth.' 10,500 ha. were allocated for Goal 2 sites that would protect special natural, recreational and cultural sites. Since the year 2000 approximately 7000 ha. have been allocated to date - and that leaves about 3500 ha. yet to be utilized out of this allotment.

EVERYTHING IS IN PLACE for successfully establishing a Park here through the Goal 2 designation. It is just up to our elected leaders to make it happen!  With enough support from British Colombians, we will make it happen!
