Provide universal school bus travel subsidy for all school-aged children
The Issue
In Gloucestershire, where I reside, my daughter attends a local grammar school. Unfortunately, the annual bus fare is an exorbitant £3,000, with no subsidies or financial support available. This substantial cost presents a significant financial burden, limiting our ability to support her after-school participation in additional activities. Many families face similar dilemmas, forced to choose between their child’s education and extra-curricular development due to prohibitive transport costs.
The current statutory school transport rules impose a geographical disadvantage on families like mine. Under these rules, only students living a certain distance away from their school—usually within an impractical mileage radius—or those attending their immediate catchment school are entitled to free transport. This outdated policy fails to consider the diverse educational needs of students and the financial strain it imposes on families.
Education is a fundamental right, and every child deserves access to it without financial barriers. With household budgets stretched more than ever, the cost of school transport places an additional and unnecessary burden on families. It's crucial that we reevaluate the criteria for providing school transport subsidies and ensure they are fair and inclusive.
We propose that the government provides a universal school bus travel subsidy for all school-aged children, regardless of their home-to-school distance or school choice. This would not only ease the financial burden on families but also encourage broader participation in educational opportunities, which contributes positively to children's personal and academic development.
Countries like Finland and the Netherlands subsidize school transport as part of their commitment to equitable education. It is time for the UK to step up and demonstrate a similar commitment. By eliminating transportation disparities, we can level the playing field for all students.
Join me in urging our government to acknowledge and address this pressing issue by signing this petition. Together, we can push for a fairer school transport policy that reflects the needs and realities of modern families and ensures no child is left behind due to the costs of their journey to education.
