Provide safe lockers for survivors in gyms
The Issue
Survivors of extreme violence know firsthand the fear and uncertainty that comes with trying to escape trafficking or domestic violence. For many, as some of our founders were lucky enough to do, finding a safe space is not just a want—it's a critical necessity. This need is echoed by many other victims and survivors who, fearing for their lives or the lives of those not yet fortunate enough to escape, reached out to us confidentially to share their struggles, needs and fears.
In the United States and Canada, gyms and training facilities frequently act as accessible locations where many victims can find temporary refuge. They are widespread and often open at various times, offering an opportunity for those in precarious situations to find a moment of safety. It's time to turn this potential for saving lives into a reality. We are calling on major fitness organizations across the country, including the YWCA, YMCA, Gold's Gyms, Curves International, and Planet Fitness, to advocate that their locations dedicate three or more lockers at each facility specifically for use by individuals who are working to escape violence due to domestic abuse or trafficking. We are not asking anyone to give away free memberships, just free access to a handful of lockers for victims who seek to escape dangerous situations.
These lockers would offer a secure place for survivors to store essentials, such as clothes, important documents, identification, and personal items, without fear of discovery or theft. Providing these lockers in gyms and training facilities, which are already centers for personal betterment and health, sends a powerful message of support and safety to those who need it most.
The implementation of safe lockers is not only feasible but represents a concrete step towards supporting vulnerable individuals in our communities. By allocating a few lockers per facility, and alerting local or national hotlines to their availability, these facilities would be providing a crucial lifeline that underscores their commitment not only to physical health but to the overall well-being and safety of all community members.
We urge these institutions to recognize their unique position and make a tremendous impact in the lives of so many who are trying to break free from cycles of violence and abuse and from being trafficked. Please sign this petition to encourage these fitness centers to take action and create a sanctuary for survivors across the nation. Let's work together to provide security and hope where it's needed most. Help victims escape to the safe space they need to survive.
