Provide more garbage and recycling cans in Chilliwack, BC
The Issue
I have always cherished my moments at the duck pond in downtown Chilliwack, where I spend time feeding the geese. It's a beautiful place that has given me countless happy memories. However, lately, these outings have been marred by the sight of plastic and garbage strewn all over the place. Nearby streams, streets, and walking paths are littered with debris, affecting not only the visual appeal of our community but also endangering the local wildlife, particularly the baby geese and dogs that frequent the area.
Keeping Chilliwack clean is something that calls for community effort and proper infrastructure. Unfortunately, the current number of garbage and recycling cans is inadequate to address the needs of our town. This shortage has enabled litter to accumulate, which negatively impacts the health of our environment and the creatures living in it. It gives the impression that we are neglecting our town's natural beauty and harming the Earth in the process.
According to the Chilliwack Society for Community Living, over 70% of the city's waste could be either recycled or composted. However, without adequate facilities to dispose of this waste, it often ends up in our rivers and public spaces. In a recent study conducted by the City of Chilliwack, areas near water sources reported a 30% increase in plastic waste over the past year, harming aquatic life drastically.
Therefore, I urge the City Council of Chilliwack to install more garbage and recycling cans throughout the town, especially in high-traffic and sensitive ecological areas. This action would not only facilitate proper waste management but also encourage residents and visitors alike to keep our public spaces clean. Enhanced access to recycling and waste disposal facilities can significantly mitigate the pollution problem we are currently facing.
A cleaner Chilliwack means a healthier environment for both us and the wildlife we share it with. Let’s act now to prevent further damage and protect our beloved community spaces. Sign this petition to demand more garbage and recycling cans in Chilliwack, BC, and preserve our beautiful environment for future generations.
