The Issue

Do you know that Nigerian students now try to commit suicide due to their in-ability to pay tuition fees?

It was also reported last year 2022 that a university worker actually committed suicide over his inability to pay daughters school fees.

It's 2023 and university students in lagos still don't have access to any kind of educational benefit, there are no options in place to enable them pay their fees without financial obstruction.

While in school I have had to watch several classmates struggle with paying tuition fees. It was a constant dance of borrowing to begging and pleading to write exams because they cannot afford to pay fees at the time.

Many dropped out and others turned to fraud as a means for survival but the few that manage to fight through turn to suicide when all hope seems lost like in the case of my dear friend who after her father lost his job couldn't keep up with paying her fees.

Everyone told her to "help yourself " and oh! how hard she tried from dropping out of a semester to doing paid menial jobs to gather enough for her tuition. She didn't get to experience the university like the rest of us neither did all that work yield a satisfactory result. So when left with outstanding semesters and more school bills to pay,she tried to take her own life.In the suicide note she published online all emphasis was on how much she just wanted to rest.To let go and rest. The physical, emotional and mental pressure had led her to try to take her own life.

The pressure and stress that comes with schooling in Nigeria is already enough that we don't need the added pressure of unpaid fees.

University students from all walks of life deserve to go to school without having to worry about how to pay their next school fees .

Our students deserve educational benefits like having access to educational grants and student loans.

Education is important to a country's progress so students deserve the privilege of having educational "safety nets" to catch them when they fall.Imagine the number of lives and futures this would save?

Join me to call on the Lagos state governor, the ministry of education and the Nigerian government to please grant our students the REST they deserve by providing them access to student loans through educational grants.

This will go a long way in curbing the new wave of fraud and fraudulent activities that has now become the safe space for many and like in the case of my friend literally saving the life's of students who are constantly struggling to stay in school and serve as renewed hope for the new generation of students.
