Provide Haitian Creole Classes for Childcare Educators

The Issue

The United States hosts the largest concentration of Haitians abroad, with a significant portion residing in states such as Florida and Massachusetts. Many Haitian individuals migrate to the US in pursuit of better opportunities, education, and quality of life. Inspired by a desire to contribute to their native Haitian community, a considerable number pursue certification as childcare educators through the Department of Children and Families (DCF).

One of the prerequisites for becoming an educator in the US is the completion of the 45-Hour DCF Mandated Early Childhood Education program, along with passing a required exam. However, this exam is only available in English and Spanish. According to the Early Learning Coalition (ELC) and DCF, there is a pressing need for daycare teachers not only in the Hispanic community but also in the Haitian community. Many Haitian educators face challenges in passing the exam due to language barriers, as ELC and DCF currently offer classes only in Spanish, neglecting Haitian Creole and French.

Therefore, I am respectfully requesting that ELC and DCF expand their offerings to include classes and exams in Haitian Creole and French for teachers. This would ensure that Haitian educators have equal opportunities as native English and Spanish speakers. Additionally, I urge the ELC to provide Haitian teachers with the same stipend upon program completion as is offered to Hispanic and English teachers.

Implementing these additions to the government program would not only empower talented Haitian educators but also foster diversity and inclusive within the childcare education sector while promoting financial stability among underrepresented communities.
